STYKO reveals FACEIT "bug" that can give teams an unfair advantage in pistol rounds

Bug or feature? You decide.

In a recent video post on X, Martin "STYKO" Styk discussed an oversight in FACEIT matches that can give teams an unfair advantage in the crucial first pistol round of the game. The bug/oversight effectively allows each team to know what spawns one side will have in the pistol round before it is played.

The "bug" hinges on Counter-Strike 2 using a limited number of predefined spawn locations for the Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists, with some maps having only five, while others like Dust2 have thirteen for the Terrorists.

STYKO pointed out that in all FACEIT matches, the spawn locations of the knife round will be the same as those of the pistol round. This means if a team is on the T-side for the knife round, they will know exactly what spawns the T-side will get in the pistol round, whether that is their team or the enemy team.

For most maps, this information is not the most important when each side only has five spawn locations, but for some like Dust2, which has the previously mentioned thirteen for terrorists, it can be invaluable intel.

In the video, STYKO points out on Dust2 that knowing what spots your opponent will spawn into can help you predict what they might do. For example, if you know all the Terrorists are going to spawn closer to B-site, you can stack the B-site in preparation for a potential rush. Another potential use is if you learn your side's spawns ahead of time, you could have extra planning time for the pistol round or have extra notice for which players will need to throw spawn utility.

As many online leagues and open qualifiers use FACEIT, specifically for BO1s where pistols are extra important, this bug could potentially be harmful as it gives players an unintended advantage if they know the bug. While both sides do get some information, it is definitely better for the team that learns the T-side spawns as those affect strategies more often on some maps.

In addition to his former career as a player and current role as a pundit, STYKO is known for his uploads on YouTube that provide tips and insight into Counter-Strike. While this quirk of FACEIT is known to some, STYKO was clear that he thinks it should be changed. "It feels illegal. But hey, hate the game, not the player."
