Major-winning esports org Luminosity goes back up for sale two months after being acquired for ~$645,000

All this for an ads license?

According to a report by Esports Radar's Victor Frascarelli and confirmed by statements from Vertiqal Studios' CEO Jon Dwyer, Vertiqal Studios are set to sell the Luminosity brand two months after acquiring the storied esports organization from Enthusiast Gaming in September.

The move sees Vertiqal shed the majority of Luminosity's assets, which were purchased for around $645,000, while retaining Luminosity's Google Ad Monetization (GAM) license for YouTube, a purportedly lucrative asset that "allows premium YouTube ad monetization and is held by fewer than 50 entities globally."

According to Vertiqal Studios CEO Jon Dwyer, acquiring the Google Ad Monetization (GAM) license was the primary objective of buying Luminosity from Enthusiast Gaming, claiming that Vertiqal's plan was always to sell off Luminosity's other assets, including the brand, while retaining the GAM license.

The sale of Luminosity comes after Vertiqal landed on hot water for failing to pay a number of Luminosity's creators and players after acquiring the brand from Enthusiast. According to Dwyer, the profits from the sale of the Luminosity brand will be used to pay off existing liabilities so Luminosity's new owners can restart the brand with a clean slate.

When the transaction is completed, Vertiqal will stay on with the new owners reportedly as a commercial partner, with Dwyer being bullish about Luminosity's chances of returning to its "former glory".

The whole situation is rather strange as it saw Vertiqal purchase Luminosity to strip out a singular asset before flipping the actual brand to a new owner. While the new owners won't take on any of Enthusiast or Vertiqal's debts, they will undoubtedly have to do some damage control after a tumultuous tenure with Vertiqal.
