Nouns top $5k NA Revival Cup over NRG

Nouns have claimed their first event win of 2024.

Nouns have won Complexity and Mythic League's NA Revival Cup over NRG, going on an impressive run that was punctuated by the team taking down M80 in a three-map series to claim their first event win of 2024.

Day two of the NA Revival Cup began with NRG facing off against Party Astronauts in the semifinals. The first map, NRG's pick of Mirage, ended up being a one-sided affair for Colby "Walco" Walsh's team, as he smashed his former teammates with a 9-3 T-side before closing out the map with a 4-1 CT-side, winning both pistol rounds in the process. PA's map pick, Nuke, ended up being much closer with the first half closing out NRG narrowly leading on their CT-side 7-5. After switching sides, NRG started by going 4/4 on pistol rounds in the series before climbing up to match point 12-6.

Despite this looking like the end of the road for PA, they managed to rally and win the next six rounds in a row to force overtime. With this, and the specter of a third map looming, overtime on Nuke went the distance, with the both teams trading blows in the 35 minute-long map before NRG ultimately took Nuke 25-23.

The second semifinal series began in an equally dominant fashion for M80, as they utterly smashed Nouns on their map pick of Inferno, winning the opening CT-side 9-3 before closing out the map in rapid fashion 13-3. While this result would normally spell disaster for Nouns in most circumstances, Nouns managed to rally and actually turn the tables on M80. On M80's pick of Ancient, Nouns won the CT-side 9-3 before posting a nearly identical T-side to M80's to win Ancient 13-4.

With both teams losing their map picks in one-sided fashions, the decider map, Dust2, was bound to be interesting as it is also the newest map in the pool. To start, Nouns tried their best to make it one-sided by winning six rounds in a row on the CT-side before M80 were able to get on the board.

The half ultimately ended with Nouns leading 8-4, putting the team in a strong position to win the map. As such, the onus was on M80 to answer back and they ultimately failed to do that as Nouns won their fourth pistol round of the series before keeping M80 at bay long enough to take Dust2 13-8, scoring a huge win over one of NA's top squads and their longtime rivals.

With the finals set, the match began on NRG's choice of Inferno, with the team initially starting 0-3 down before finding their footing on their T-side to win the half 7-5. Moving into their CT-side, NRG found themselves once again starting on the backfoot as Nouns won the first five rounds in a row to climb up to 10-7. In a similar tale to the first half, Nouns would once again see their lead wither away once NRG found their footing, moving swiftly to retake the initiative and ultimately the map 13-11.

As Nouns were now down 1-0 in the series, they needed to rally on Vertigo in a big way, and that is absolutely what they did. Starting on their T-side, Nouns utterly and completely demolished NRG, posting a completely one-sided 10-2 half to leave NRG reeling before Nouns won three rounds in a row on their T-side to win the map 13-2.

Nouns went into the third and final map, Mirage, with their confidence buoyed, and despite losing their opening T-side pistol, they ultimately posted a strong 8-4 half before heading into their CT-side. In the second half, NRG won yet another pistol and the following round, however their luck ran out after this point as Nouns would take the next five rounds in confident fashion, only allowing one bomb plant, before taking Mirage 13-6 to win the event.

During the series, Christopher "cJ dA K1nG" Jones was the team's hero as he posted a 1.39 rating.

Nouns' victory in the NA also serves as something of a preview for the NA Revival Series announced by Complexity during day two of the event. In partnership with PrizePicks, Complexity and Mythic League are set to run $5k monthly events for the next twelve months, with the total prizepool offering up $60k to support NA teams in the region.
