Failed clutches cost M80 against B8 as they miss first shot at Stage 2
After strong wins over Lynn Vision and Sharks on day one, M80 faced off against B8 in the 2-0 pool for a spot in Stage 2 of the IEM Cologne Major. After a close loss in map one, M80 failed too many clutches to let B8 back in, falling in another competitive map.
German captain Elias "s1n" Stein struggled individually on both maps, ending the series with a 22-40 K/D and 0.66 rating
The series began on B8's pick of Ancient with the Ukrainian side putting M80 down 1-5 early. A six-round run late in the half from M80 took the lead back as they entered the second half up 7-5. B8 once again started the half quickly with five rounds before M80 won one. B8 then got another two, putting M80 at an 8-12 deficit. Though they got three back, M80 couldn't secure overtime as they lost Ancient 11-13.
Map two was M80's pick of Inferno, and the North American squad started with a quick 2-0 lead. The teams went back and forth, but M80 again had a slight 7-5 lead going into the second half. The teams traded streaks before M80 failed three map points, sending the map to overtime. Once there, M80 took a 14-13 lead after the first half, then a 1v3 from Danylo "s1zzi" Vinnyk nearly cost them the game, but they got another overtime 15-15.
More traded rounds sent the match to a third overtime as the teams remained tied 18-18. M80 stayed competitive, but crucial mistakes cost them in the end as they fell 20-22.
