CS2 and Vitality win at The Game Awards, but the ZywOo misses out
At last night's Game Awards presentation, it was a big night for the French and for CS2, but not for the young French CS2 superstar.
In the pre-show segment, prior to the historic nine-award-winning night for French RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the Game Awards quickly ran through its three esports awards, much to the apathy of the general gaming audience in attendance.
CS2 claimed the "coveted" Esports Game of the Year award, with the franchise claiming the award for the first time since it was introduced at the 2015 Game Awards, in a year when Kenny "KennyS" Schrub also claimed the Esports Player of the Year Award.
Since then, a small handful of Counter-Strike players and organizations have won Player of the Year or Team of the Year at the Game Awards, with Danny "zonic" Sørensen winning Esports Coach of the Year a couple of times, and the esports category has both grown and shrunk. But until this year the award for Esports Game of the Year has gone either to League of Legends, Overwatch, or VALORANT. At long last, CS2 can be considered a real esport.
Vitality's CS2 team won Best Esports Team, thanks to their dominant run of first place finishes in the first half of the year capped off with the victory at the BLAST Austin Major. However, the Player of the Year award went to Jung "Chovy" Ji-hoon, the star League of Legends player for Gen.G. Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut was nominated but did not win, despite starring on the Team of the Year.
The three-time HLTV Player of the Year still hasn't won the illustrious Game Awards trophy, so clearly we can't reasonably put him in any GOAT discussions.
