Complexity bounce back from being torched on Inferno

An enormous clutch from the South African IGL when it mattered most kept North America's hopes alive.

The Americans were riding high after Katowice for being ranked 10th in the world, finishing in the Top 8, and qualifying for the BLAST.tv Paris Major Americas RMR in Monterrey later in April. Imperial have been dominating in their domestic scene as they retooled their roster and bid farewell to longtime teammate Fernando "fer" Alvarenga. This match was critical with it being the last-place elimination match.

Starting off on Imperial's pick of Inferno, there is nothing more than to say it was straight domination the entire match. Pure, clinical CS:GO played by the Brazilians. It was over before it ever began and that is how Complexity ended up losing 1-16 in the first map of the contest.

With the Americas reeling from an incredibly embarrassing map loss, they proceeded to Ancient, which Imperial have had no real success on and barely play. It would once again start off hot for the Brazilians as they jumped to a 6-2 lead, before Complexity would claw back to salvage a 8-7 half.

The beginning of the second half favored Complexity as they widened the gap to a 12-8 lead, but that would be the last time that Complexity truly held a comfortable advantage as they would go on to let the lead slip with Imperial tying the game at 13-13. However, Complexity would rally back, bringing it home in a 16-14 victory.

Overpass would be the decider, with both teams equally matched on the playing field due to their recent relative success. The game started with Complexity on their T-side who would find instant success by winning the pistol. The first half would be back-and-forth consistently with no side gaining any sort of tangible advantage until Complexity pulled through with another 8-7 halftime lead.

The second half would once again start out well for Complexity as they jumped ahead 11-7, but suddenly found themselves down 12-11 after Imperial found their groove. Complexity showed some signs of life in the latter portion of regulation, and were able to successfully force overtime on the back of a momentum shifting clutch from Håkon "hallzerk" Fjærli.

Overtime also went blow-for-blow and felt like where this series truly began. The highlight of the tournament thus far for North America was the 1v4 clutch from Johnny "JT" Theodosiou to force double overtime and keep Complexity alive. There were some questionable choices in the preceding round from COL that put them onto the brink of elimination from the event, but all's well that ends well and the Americans proceeded to a second bout of extra time.

The theme of the second set of overtime was some missed AWP shots from the professor, Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo. The Imperial captain's enormous presence in the server was felt on multiple occasions in a way that shifted the momentum to favor the Brazilian camp, however Complexity's opportunities in the second overtime that resulted in a 2-1 advantage on T-side were largely the result of the legend's missed shots. Complexity won their first CT round of the second overtime and earned two opportunities to close the match, the first of which was unraveled by a wallbang headshot from FalleN to break Complexity's retake. Imperial forced triple overtime on the back of a B rush that was pixels away from being a successful 1v2 retake for Complexity with an AWP, but Justin "FaNg" Coakley legged Ricardo "boltz" Prass and was killed while trying to disengage.

Ricky "floppy" Kemery saved Complexity with a huge hold on B site when Imperial seemed to have caught COL mid rotation, but then Jhonatan "JOTA" Willian bounced back and proved the catalyst for Imperial to recover the next round on A site. FalleN rounded out the first half of overtime with an ace, ensuring that no one could accuse him of failing to bounce back after some key misses earlier in the match. But Imperial crumbled on the CT-side, as Complexity picked up a 2v5 on the B site en route to a T-sided sweep, with floppy holding the line on Imperial's final retake attempt as he sent FalleN and co. back to Brazil.

Complexity now will face the loser of the match between FURIA and BIG tomorrow morning.
