FURIA march to the Cologne Major semifinals after besting 9z
Not long after Aurora claimed the first semifinal spot over BetBoom, we had a South American showdown as the Brazilians on FURIA took on the Latin Americans on 9z. With this being 9z's first Major playoffs and likely Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo's last Cologne, the stage was set for an epic match in the Lanxess.
9z had a strong start to take their map pick and an early lead in map two, but FURIA fought back to take the second map. When the decider came, FURIA emerged victorious with a full-team performance.
The quarterfinal began on 9z's pick of Dust2 with the Latin American mix taking a commanding 5-0 start. FURIA got a few, but 9z still led 9-3 going into halftime. FURIA began to turn the game around after winning the pistol, narrowing 9z's lead to 8-10. However, 9z eventually got it together and closed the map 13-8, taking the lead in the series.
The series continued on FURIA's pick of Mirage, with Yuri "yuurih" Boian picking up an unreal 1v3 clutch. Keeping their composure, 9z responded with a force win and a few more rounds to put FURIA down 1-5, in part helped by an unfortunate PC crash from Kaike "KSCERATO" Cerato. FURIA still kept hope alive as they tied the map 6-6 at the half. 9z took the second pistol, but FURIA had put up a strong CT-side to take the map 13-9.
Overpass was the deciding map, and 9z started on the right foot again with the first pistol and conversion. FURIA responded with force as they took nine of the next ten rounds to enter the second half with a huge 9-3 lead. 9z got the second pistol to close the gap, but FURIA held their ground and took the map 13-6.
