CS: Legacy fan project in danger of being shut down by Valve
CS:Legacy, a fan-built remake of Counter-Strike 1.6 in the Source Engine, shared a worrying development today regarding the future of their project has informed the team that the remake of CS 1.6 may no longer be in compliance with Valve's licensing terms, forcing the team to shut down the project.
In the X post sharing the news, the CS:Legacy developers expressed their confusion at Valve's statement as CS:Legacy is in full compliance with the Source SDK's license and Valve's Steamworks guidelines as they are using the official SDK and releasing the project for free.
Because the request from Valve goes against their own licensing terms and guidelines, the CS:Legacy developers have reached out to Valve to try and understand the situation, however Valve have not returned their emails despite multiple attempts.
In light of this news, the CS:Legacy developers have decided to continue development on the Source version of the mod while also starting a new spiritual successor that is set to run on the Godot engine and not use any of Valve's code or intellectual property.
With CS:Legacy on the chopping block following the cease-and-desist sent to Classic Offensive the developers of CS:Legacy speculated that Valve are locking down their modding tools and access to their ip, a massive change in philosophy for a company that has found much success due to the efforts of modders.
