paiN, High Coast, Triumph, and Bad News Bears advance to Mythic Cup Spring 2021 semifinals

None of these teams will walk away empty-handed, but to the victor goes the bulk of the spoils.

The first round of Mythic Cup Spring 2021 has concluded with just one series going to three maps. Bad News Bears won a closely contested series with Recon 5 that went to overtime on the decider, while the rest of the favored teams advanced with more straightforward 2-0 sweeps.

Starting with the early series, paiN promptly took care of Secret Club, allowing them just thirteen rounds in the series and two second-half rounds on each map. Vinicios "PKL" Coelho led the South Americans with 19 kills on Nuke and Rodrigo "biguzera" Bittencourt caught fire with 25 frags on Inferno. Secret Club stumbled out of the gates in their first outing with Gage "Infinite" Green as a part of the lineup, with no players tallying more than fifteen kills on either map.

The next series pitted the hosts, Mythic, against the likes of Alan "Shakezullah" Hardeman and his squad from Triumph. Triumph were even more dominant across the series than paiN, allowing just nine rounds in the sweep of Erik "fl0m" Flom and the stream team. Brendan "Bwills" Williams led all players on both Nuke and Dust2, tallying 28 and 23 kills, respectively. fl0m led by example with 22 kills on Nuke, while David "DAVEY" Stafford was the only player on Mythic to break double digits in the fragging department on Dust2 as he finished with 17 frags.

High Coast eventually got their win, but RBG made them work for it. Things remained close after the first half of play, with High Coast barely sneaking out an 8-7 lead after their T-side of Dust2. Their defense on CT-side held firm however, as they jumped out to a 13-7 lead and traded rounds back and forth with RBG until they converted their second match point for a 1-0 series lead. Rodrigo "RCF" Figueiredo and Brandon "bew" Roberts each contributed 29 kills to the High Coast cause, while Jadan "HexT" Postma led RBG with 21 frags in the loss.

RBG pushed High Coast even further on Inferno, fighting off three consecutive match points to force Josh "PwnAlone" Pigue and friends to overtime. Once there, however, RBG seemed to run out of steam as they managed just one round and fell short of forcing the series on to a Mirage decider. PwnAlone led all players with 31 frags while Connor "chop" Sullivan led RBG with 24 kills as they bowed out of contention.

As mentioned previously, this last series between Recon 5 and Bad News Bears was the highlight of the night in terms of competitiveness. Each side took their own map pick by pairing a solid first-half lead with a flawless second half, paving the way for a third map decider.

Each side managed eight rounds on the T-side of Mirage, but it was Recon 5 who faltered late. Tyler "tweiss" Weiss' 32 kills were not enough in the end as Recon 5 failed to convert two match points, allowed Bad News Bears back into the series, and paid the price in overtime. Recon 5 found just two victories in the added rounds as Michael "Swisher" Schmid and friends advanced to face High Coast. Tonight's series will be a rematch after Bad News Bears lost to High Coast in the grand final of ESEA Spring Cash Cup 3 on Sunday.
