SK falls to G2 in quarterfinals

Much like at the Major, SK are once again eliminated in the quarterfinals, this time falling to their nemesis G2.

The teams chose to battle it out on Cobblestone, Inferno, and Mirage. All are maps SK are known to be good on, and the same goes for G2 except for Mirage. For a very long time, this core’s permaban was Mirage, but curiously at this tournament decided to ban other maps like Train instead. Instead of failing, G2 instead picked up many big wins on the map, which speaks volumes about the team’s map pool going forward.

SK started off with a strong first half on their map pick, winning eleven rounds to G2’s four. Star level play from Fernando “fer” Alvarenga led to SK to 15 rounds early in the second half, but G2 showed the had some fight left in them. Dan “apEX” Madesclaire and Nathan “NBK” Schmitt tried their best, but ultimately caved to SK’s CT side and lost the first map 16-11.

G2’s pick Inferno started off rough for the Frenchmen, only garnering six rounds on the CT side. SK followed up this strong first half performance by winning the first four rounds of their CT side. Powered again by apEX and this time Kenny “kennyS” Schrub, G2 won five rounds in a row to force overtime, where the French superteam came out on top 19-17.Mirage looked, as is the story of this series, worrisome for G2, as they were down quite early, but Richard “shox” Papillon’s men rallied and ended up with an even scoreline after the first 30 rounds. Despite losing yet another pistol round, G2 dominated the second half, and they closed out the map 16-11 without too much trouble. A nod should be given to Marcelo “coldzera” David for his performance this map, as he put up big numbers during the loss.

This series furthers the pattern of G2 being SK’s kryptonite. G2, all the way since mid last year, has consistently beaten SK. Something about the leadership of shox and the star power he has control over gives them an edge over the Brazilian powerhouse. With one of the two favorites taken care of, G2 need only worry about Astralis who will face Gambit later today. G2 will play the winner of Ninjas in Pyjamas vs Natus Vincere in the semifinals for a chance to play in the grand final later the same day.
