Topsy-turvy IEM Sydney Day 1 comes to an end
The first day of play down under has concluded, and boy did it deliver.
While the first four matches went as expected, TyLoo threw a wrench into the proceedings by upsetting Jake "Stewie2K" Yip and SK in overtime. Damian "daps" Steele and NRG nearly did the same, taking the recently-crowned DreamHack Masters Marseille champions Astralis #tothebrink.
Unexpectedly finding themselves in the lower bracket, SK were placed on the backfoot by a Grayhound side they likely never expected to be playing, losing a close Mirage 16-13. SK were able to equalize the series on Cache, but Erdenetsogt "erkaSt" Gantulga helped slam the door on SK's Australian adventure.

In the upper bracket of Group A, it was the quasi-hometown team of Renegades taking on the European mixture of FaZe. The teams won their map picks in close fashion, pushing the series to the decider of Inferno. There, in a triple overtime thriller, Aaron "AZR" Ward and and Karlo "USTILO" Pivac helped topple the previous best team in the world.
This likely was not the face that Nikola "NiKo" Kovač intended to show at this event.
