First day of ECS Season 5 Challenger Cup concludes

The opening round of matches went as expected, with all the favorites securing victories.

The ECS Season 5 Challenger Cup kicked off last night, with eight teams vying for three spots in the upcoming league. Featuring an interesting mixture of teams including ESL Pro League, ESEA MDL, and international squads, the quarterfinals promised some more CS to watch for people who had not had their fill from Katowice.

The top half of the bracket was the more interesting of the pair, as North American sides compLexity and Rise Nation were taken the distance by the international pairing of Bravado and oNe — with compLexity narrowly emerging the victors after a double overtime.

The bottom portion of the bracket saw Rogue take care of business against fellow EPL squad Ghost, and Splyce handily taking down the upstart MDL team of BlackOut. All in all, while some of the individual maps were close, the day's action played out as expected.

The ECS Season 5 Challenger Cup will resume today, with the following matches on the table:

Bravado vs. Brazil oNe 3 PM EST
United States BlackOut vs. Canada Ghost 3 PM EST
compLexity vs. United States Rise Nation 6 PM EST
United States Rogue vs. United States Splyce 6 PM EST

The winners of the later matches will secure themselves a spot in ECS Season 5. Due to the withdrawal of CLG from the league and male Counter-Strike as a whole, there will be another spot on offer in the lower bracket for the team that manages to survive the gauntlet.
