M80 top Thunderpick World Championship NA Series 1 after forfeit-filled playoffs
After playing a whopping two maps over the course of the entire event, M80 took first place in the Thunderpick World Championship NA Series 1. After receiving a direct invite to the playoffs, M80 accepted forfeits from Incognito in the quarterfinals and Zomblers in the semis. In the final, they took down Wildcard in a competitive 2-0 to secure the title and the first-place $7,500 prize.
Of the seven matches intended to play out over the bracket, only two were actually played: the aforementioned final and a quarterfinal between Zomblers and InControl. The other five matches (three quarters and both semis) were not played due to various reasons, a disappointing way for the event to play out.
The final started on Wildcard's pick of Dust2. Wildcard had a strong T-side to put M80 in a big hole before the American-German mix got three rounds at the end, closing the gap to 5-7. Wildcard took the second pistol as well, but M80 were convincing on their T-side and took the map to overtime. Continuing their form, M80 took a 15-12 lead. Wildcard got two back, but M80 closed the first map 16-14.
M80 picked Inferno, but lost their third pistol in a row. Despite that, they still put up a dominant T-side to take an 8-4 lead. Wildcard won their fourth pistol in a row and tied the game, but M80 found their footing and eventually closed the map 13-10.
