nero and Eclipse took out Rise and hate's Chess Club en route to the main event

Eclipse and Russian Canadians qualify for Mythic Winter Cup

The first qualifier of the year saw a surprisingly good turnout.

The qualifier for Mythic's Winter Cup played out yesterday, seeing a full field of 128 teams vying for two spots in this weekend's event.

In the first round of play, Cameron "cam" Kern's New Haven Chargers were defeated handily by Main side Gemini, despite a strong performance from coach Corey "flashstep" Parks. Gemini would then go on to be eliminated in the next round by Ian "heretic" Carfora's Tidal side, who would in turn be defeated by timbermen in the Round of 32.

In the Round of 16, Recon 5's new squad were narrowly edged out by Veloz, as Paul "aris" Wilson and Brian "chew" Mao teamed to outmatch David "cynic" Polster. The round also saw Rise and SKDC scrape past Advanced teams Villainous and Headshot Kings, with both matches going to overtime before the incoming Premier sides were able to emerge victorious.

The Round of 8 finally saw some Premier on Premier action, with hate's Chess Club dominating SKDC, and Eclipse taking down Rise 16-11 on Mirage. Meanwhile, timbermen took care of business against Veloz, and Russian Canadians were just barely able to hold off Verum.

In the final round of play, Russian Canadians survived another close match against timbermen, while John "john" Bruyea powered Eclipse to an easy win over hate's Chess Club to reach the main event.

The full bracket is available here.
