IESF controversy as Detonate selected as US representative

Questions arise about why another qualifier with Canada was not held.

Earlier this week, IESF announced that Detonate would be the United States' representative for the upcoming IESF World Championships in Iași, Romania which begins August 26th and runs through September 3rd.

In qualifying, a majority Evil Geniuses team consisting of Paytyn "junior" Johnson, Jeorge "Jeorge" Endicott, Michael "Swisher" Schmid, William "RUSH" Wierzba, Ethan "reck" Serrano, and coach Tommy "Axed" .Ryan defeated a Team Canada comprised of David "J0LZ" Jolin, Paul "aris" Wilson, Walker "walker" Harris, Saad "Pluto" Siraj, and Gabriel "tENSKI" Rodrigue, mauling them in a 2-0 match.

However, Dust2.us understands that this iteration of Team USA had to withdraw from the competition due to timing clashes for upcoming events. junior and Jeorge are part of the Evil Geniuses main roster which is preparing for ESL Pro League beginning August 30th. The squad was placed into Group B for the upcoming event. Additionally, RUSH is now no longer part of Evil Geniuses, while Swisher and reck are part of M80, who will also likely be preparing for ESL Pro League during this time.

The United States Esports Federation (USEF) decided to begin looking for alternative representatives to the Evil Geniuses mix. Dust2.us is aware that the governing body had reached out to Party Astronauts and M80, both of whom were unable to fully commit to the event. As a last resort, the organization settled on Detonate to represent the United States.

In response to this announcement, Team Canada and Reason Gaming member walker took to Twitter to denounce the decision, saying it makes "zero sense" and that the IESF have been biased towards the United States on the issue. walker theorized that Team USA could essentially fill their roster with all the top players, regardless of who actually won the qualifier.

As for now however, Detonate will be heading to the IESF World Championships with the following team:

  • United States Nolan "Louie" Herges

  • United States Austin "austin" Meadows

  • United States Spencer "Pugg" Moore

  • United States Mason "mason" Watkins

  • United States Collin "CoJoMo" Moren
