Subroza and Just For Fun notched two upsets on the day

Just For Fun, Riot Squad, Whalers, and INTZ through to second day of IEM Katowice qualifier

The first outting for Gen.G did not go as planned.

The first day of the first IEM Katowice 2020 qualifier has come to an end, seeing four teams left standing.

Gen.G and the other notable teams navigated the first two rounds of play without incident, but in the third round Damian "daps" Steele and his men found themselves against Just For Fun, a mix squad featuring Matthew "WARDELL" Yu and Yassine "Subroza" Taoufik. A 35 kill performance from the French Canadian was enough to edge out his former teammates 16-14, sending Gen.G home early from their first event.

The third round of play also saw Riot Squad defeat Rugratz, INTZ top Rap Gang, and New England Whalers (ex-Ascent) take down Triumph.

The quarterfinals were rife with upsets, seeing Just For Fun notch another win over Envy despite 34 kills from stand-in Jaccob "yay" Whiteaker, Riot Squad smash Singularity on Train, and Chaos suffering the same fate against INTZ.

The final match of the night saw the aforementioned Whalers/ex-Ascent upset eUnited in an overtime thriller on Nuke.

The full bracket is available here.

The qualifier will resume tomorrow, with the following best-of-threes:

United States Whalers vs. Brazil INTZ
United States Just For Fun vs. United States Riot Squad

The two victors of tomorrow's matches will advance to the Closed Qualifier, which will be played out next month.

As a reminder, registration for the second qualifier is open.
