Complexity lose vs. paiN; what went wrong?

Spoiler alert: a lot went wrong.

Complexity and paiN met each other on the 1-1 bracket after both teams won their first but lost their second BO1 of the Paris Major. Playing on Nuke, a map where the teams have faced each other twice in the recent past, Complexity couldn't manage to get things going and paiN capitalized with a 16-4 win. The map choice was even interesting, with paiN having beaten the Americans on Nuke during the RMR in a somewhat closer match. So, what were the reasons for such a blowout?

paiN are on another level at the moment

It's not a surprise that the Brazilians have been looking good recently, but today they seemed like they knew what would happen before it happened. Always on the right place at the right time, hitting almost every shot, and rotating correctly, they did it all as a team and even gave space for Romeu "z3vy" Rocco and Rodrigo "biguzera" Bittencourt to get 20+ kills each.

While paiN have only had wins against their regional opponents, a strong performance against FaZe was nothing to scoff at. With only one more win between them and qualification, the team has never been more motivated or hungry.

It's raining in Paris right now, Complexity prefer sunny days

Do you know that thing about Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut under-performing when the air quality index is unhealthy? That's Complexity and rainy days. The team just looked out of it from the get-go.

The pistol round win to open the map meant nothing, throwing away man advantages didn't do them any favors, the missed smoke outside that gave biguzera free kills outside one time and another, executing before the smokes bloomed outside, giving paiN an early advantage on the round, and then the mental aspect of the game started to kick in, with the team entering a downward spiral. There are days like this one, unfortunately, this one came at a crucial moment.

Financial crisis inside the server

The economy was key in this BO1. paiN were able to stack their money, making them able to respond with a full buy even if they lost a round on the CT-side.

  • paiN had 14 full-buy rounds and four semi-buy rounds

  • Complexity had as many full-buys as eco, semi-eco, and semi-buy rounds (9)

  • Out of their nine full-buys, Complexity only won two

In conclusion, paiN are just good

Only one team came to play today, it was paiN. This has been Complexity's main problem recently, their consistency, or lack thereof. paiN also went through this stage but have managed to right their wrongs and are now looking scary.

There's not much analysis to do of this game. This wasn't the Complexity we are used to seeing, even if we are used to an inconsistent squad. Today is a great day to reset mentally, as they are now entering a very different phase of the Challengers stage, let's hope they can come in tomorrow with a good attitude and focus. Tomorrow's forecast is light rain showers and a gentle breeze with some sunny moments. Maybe the team can turn things around then.

What's next for Complexity and paiN?

With this loss, Complexity have gone down to the 1-2 bracket, starting their run through the elimination series. Unfortunately, there is a big chance they meet Liquid there if the other North American squad wins against Fluxo and if GamerLegion beat MOUZ. paiN are now waiting to see who they will face for their 2-1 qualification series.
