MDL Playoffs: Atmosphere crash into ex-Iceberg

All the high-seeded teams have proceeded to the next round, with the exception of Atmosphere.

The first round of the ESEA MDL Season 27 playoffs were played out yesterday, and the results landed mostly as would have been expected.

Starting out, Swole Patrol took on Etherian, in a match-up that has generally gone in favor of Ryan "freakazoid" Abadir's men in the past. The trend would continue this time, though Etherian did not go quietly as they put up double-digit scores on both maps in the series.

Next up, eUnited and Torqued made short work of RONIN and BlackOut, respectively. RONIN, using coach Kyle "flowsicK" Mendez in place of the departed Stephen "reltuC" Cutler, were unable to make a significant crack in the eUnited armor.

After a close map on Cobblestone for Torqued and BlackOut, Keven "AZK" Lariviere decided he had had enough, and absolutely slaughted the opposition with a 26-6 K-D.

The last match of the night was the sole one that went the distance. Atmosphere kicked things off by scraping their way to an overtime win on Train, but ex-Iceberg came right back with a narrow victory on Nuke.

Unfortunately for Jonathan "Jonji" Carey and friends, their ESL Pro League dreams came to an end after a 16-7 drubbing on Overpass. The map saw ex-Iceberg accrue fourteen rounds on the CT-side, and while Atmosphere put up a valiant effort, they could only delay the inevitable.

Yesterday's action has set up semifinal tilts between eUnited and ex-Iceberg, and Swole Patrol and Torqued.

As a reminder, the winners of these matches secure themselves spots at the ESEA MDL Global Challenge LAN (the location and dates of which are still unknown), as well as a spot in the coveted final that will provide a promotion to the next season of ESL Pro League.

However there is still hope for the losers, as they will go to the third place decider match. The winner of that series will secure the last North American spot at the Global Challenge, as well as a seat at the EPL Relegation table. For the fourth place team, their sole takeaway from this season will be $2,500.
