Grim: "We're struggling right now with a lack of composure in some rounds"
After a blowout loss to OG to kick off their Major, Complexity ended day one of the BLAST.tv Austin Major on a positive note with a somewhat scrappy win over Fluxo to advance to the 1-1 pool of the Stage One Swiss Stage. Following this win over the Brazilians, Michael "Grim" Wince spoke to Dust2.us' Jeffrey "Mnmzzz" Moore about the win, COL's first day at the Major, and his reunion at the Major with Paytyn "junior" Johnson.
The full interview can be found below on YouTube or in text form below. All questions and answers below have been slightly edited for length and clarity.
How are you feeling coming out of a closer-than-expected win over Fluxo?
We could've won some more rounds on CT and the half could've literally been 9-3 or 10-2 if we won a few rounds we shouldn't have lost. We're struggling right right now with a lack of composure in some rounds.
We're not taking the extra second sometimes to chill before we run in after get a few kills, or group up and play the trades. That's stuff that will come with more time and more matches played because its a couple of our first Majors and we just need more reps and experience. But overall I'm just glad we got the win and closed it out.
Close win against Fluxo and a blowout loss to OG. How are you feeling about the day overall?
I'd say obviously its not the worst because the worst would be 0-2, but in terms of our expectations... considering we expected Ancient for OG and had a good plan it definitely is a little disappointing it fell through. Obviously nicodooz had a really insane almost record-breaking game. Obviously there's stuff we could do better in that aspect.
Against Fluxo I'm just glad we got the win and there's definitely some takeaways from that game and we'll go back and watch it and see what we can do better.
How has your reunion with junior been at the Major after previously playing with him on Complexity and Triumph?
It's been awesome. I'm really good friends with Paytyn and I think he's a great player and I'm glad we have a chance to show people what he's really about. I think he has a lot of potential as a player and now is his time to show it for sure.
He's been meshing in well with everyone and we've been adding in plays for him around each map trying to get him comfortable and make sure he has a place in the team even though he's a stand-in right now.
How do you think he's grown and changed as a player since last playing with him in 2022?
On Triumph me and him were a really good duo. Obviously we didn't work too well together on COL but that was because of a mixture of things honestly it wasn't just his fault. Since then he's definitely gotten a lot better and is going for more aggro plays and playing with a lot more confidence.
His decision-making is a lot more clear on what he wants to do and his comms are much better as well. He's also overall improved in being composed in bigger games. Overall he has improved since I last played with him.
After heading into another Bo1 tomorrow are you happy to be done with Bo1 matches for the rest of the stage at least?
The Bo1s are random at times although the better team should win but Bo1s can always be random in MR12. If you win both pistols you can get the next two rounds and have six free rounds basically.
The Bo3s are definitely nice to have a cushion and are less pressure for sure. You always have another map coming that you can play so there's not as much of a do-or-die feeling compared to the Bo1.
We're looking forward to the Bo1s and will play better in the Bo3s.
Complexity will face off against NRG tomorrow at 03:00PM.
