Complexity GM points out "major flaws" in the VRS

messioso has raised strong points about flaws in Valve's Regional Standings.

Complexity's CS2 General Manager Graham "messioso" Pitt has pointed out a "major flaw" in how Valve currently calculates the Valve Regional Standings (VRS) points with regards to ongoing events.

According to messioso, teams who are knocked out of an ongoing tournament receive the full value of the event, which counted toward the crucial VRS update on February 3rd. This approach could lead to "teams overtaking others due to being eliminated" while there are teams who are still playing the tournament that got nothing.

Since the introduction of VRS last year, prizemoney earned dictates how high a team will place in the ranking. As per messioso's findings, Valve was lucky that this calculation didn't affect any important ranks until February 3rd.

"I am 99% sure it did put BIG (10k) above Wildcard (4.5k) here (both earned prizes early from Katowice), which could still have an implication for roll-down invites," messioso wrote on X.

On top of that, messioso also alerted that the way VRS is calculated at the moment could incentivize teams to forfeit a match to not lose VRS points and potentially qualify for the Major as forfeits don't count for the VRS.

This could lead organizations to ask Valve to re-evaluate how the VRS works, but only time will tell as Valve does like to work in silent ways.

The invite dates are known in advance and events could be scheduled to accommodate that, but it probably would be better to actually fix the issue.

Forfeiting isn't great, but I hope that most teams actually want to compete. Making it count as a match loss would be a good change I think.
