eUnited with Subroza in tow will face off against Singularity for a spot in the Closed Qualifier

Four teams still alive in first IEM Sydney qualifier

After 142 teams entered, only four remain to fight for two spots in the Closed Qualifier.

Day one of the first IEM Sydney Open Qualifier has come to a close, and from the 142 teams that entered only four remain. The four remaining teams will be fighting for two spots in the Closed Qualifier, where they will be facing off against compLexity, Envy, Ghost, and Luminosity.

With there being only four spots up for offer at the Closed Qualifier, day one of the Open Qualifier saw numerous MDL and EPL teams face off for a chance to advance to the next stage of the qualifier.

The day started off with a major upset as Fragging for Andy fell to advanced team Legacy early in round three, meaning they were the only MDL team not to make top 16. The newly signed Denial, with Peter "ptr" Gurney taking on AWPing duties, fell to oNe on a close map of Inferno, with oNe eventually moving onto the semi-finals after defeating their countrymen INTZ. Win Scrims Not Matches were able to confidently move through their side of the bracket beating two MDL teams, not letting iNTACT or Spacestation gain more than a handful of rounds.

In the lower half of the bracket, Swole Patrol made it to the quarterfinals, but fell to a decisive performance from Singularity, with Gage "Infinite" Green putting up a 1.91 rating against the Pro League team. While Singularity had to overcome MASSIVEimpact and Swole Patrol on their way to the semi-finals, eUnited had a far easier time in terms of matchups, swiftly defeating Hysteria and Cyclone.

Yassine "Subroza" Taoufilk, in his first matches following his departure from Ghost, greatly assisted eUnited by managing a 1.52 and 1.55 rating in their two matches, respectively. With the stage set for tomorrow, oNe will be facing Win Scrims Not Matches, and Singularity will take on eUnited in best-of-three matches to advance to the Closed Qualifier.

The final matches of the first Open Qualifier will take place later today at the following times in EST:

6:00 PM Brazil oNe vs. United States Win Scrims Not Matches BO3
6:00 PM United States Singularity vs. United States eUnited BO3

For teams that fell in the Open Qualifier, or did not participate, the second Open Qualifier is set to begin on February 2nd. That event and more are available on our Calendar.

Fragging for Andy weren’t the only MDL team not to make it to the top 16, Mythic also lost in round 3 to CycloneGG, a main team that’s 4-1
