Vorborg and co. will not be able to move on

Evil Geniuses say goodbye

The first NA team exits the competition, but not before giving it their all.

The team that everyone least expected to make it through the Americas RMR in the fashion they did, is now exiting the IEM Rio Major in a disappointing manner. Everything is not as bad as it seems, with the team showing several signs of life and bright spots. There was a sense that this team was finally getting to a comfortable stage with their teammates and formation, in stark contrast to the extremely challenging spring which say the removal of Jake "Stewie2k" Yip and the demotion of Will "RUSH" Wierzba.

Opening the game on Cloud9's map pick, the Americans struggled to get into the game on their defense with the Russians dominating the opening. EG managed to make the game competitive for a bit when they tied it at 4-4, but from then on it was all Cloud9, all the time. EG would only win one more round as Cloud9 closed it out 16-5.

This time, it was EG's map pick and it was about the same way as the first map. This time, EG were able to win the pistol and the successive rounds, but besides that, it was a largely ineffective gun round. Sergey "Ax1Le" Rykhtorov finally appeared to wake up following an incredibly slow Major so far as he dominated the scoreboard and kept EG's offense at bay. An 11-4 T-side half spelled disaster as the Americans needed a comeback to make it all work.

However, it was all for naught as EG could not convert their second-half pistol and were forced onto the back foot once more. They would be able to convert their first gun round and string some rounds together, and hinted at a late game revival bringing them to within three rounds of the Cloud9 side.

A huge round played out at 14-11 with both teams economy and round advantage in the balance, Cloud9 took the all important match point despite bringing it down to a 1v1. In the end the Cloud9 team proved too strong for the North American side and Evil Geniuses' pre-Major hype fell flat as the team went out 1:3.

Evil Geniuses look to finish out the year at home and will look forward to IEM Katowice as their next major event.
