Mythic win first ESEA 5vs5 Summer Cash Cup

A stand-in appearance from adreN helped the team take down Positive Vibes Only 2-1 in the grand final.

The first-ever ESEA 5vs5 Summer Cash Cup came to an end on Sunday, seeing the stream team of Mythic prevail over Positive Vibes Only in the grand finals to net themselves a $3,000 payday. Former Liquid coach Eric "adreN" Hoag made a return to the Mythic roster for the tournament, filling the spot left vacant after Donovan "zNf" Froid stepped down in July.

The open portion of the bracket took place on Saturday, with approximately 80 teams taking part. Included among them were the likes of Infinity, Eclipse, and Big Chillin, but none of the apparent top squads were able to make their way through to the top four stage. Instead, it was Brazen and Hc who claimed spots in the semifinals by defeating Eclipse and Infinity, respectively.

The semifinal results were extremely clear-cut as neither qualified side were able to prevail over their MDL opposition, leaving a grand final match between Mythic and Positive Vibes Only in the cards.

It was Kaitlin "Keiti" Boop who led the stream team's T-side effort on Train to kick things off, helping to garner eight rounds by the break. The swap to the defense saw adreN step up to bat alongside the AWP of Erik "fl0m" Flom, helping to take the map over the line 16-13 and move the series on to Overpass, the map pick of Positive Vibes Only.

There, it was the trio of Danny "cxzi" Strzelczyk, Justin "FaNg" Coakley, and David "Sneaky" Polster that led the way, keeping the two teams within one round of each other by the break. Once they were on the CT-side however, Positive Vibes Only assumed firm control, conceding only two rounds en route to a 16-9 finish.

The decider map of Inferno proved to be one-sided as a stellar showing from David "DAVEY" Stafford and Adam "Polen" Polen gave Mythic a strangehold on the offense, with the team posting a 12-3 lead at halftime. It seemed as if Positive Vibes Only would be able to make a comeback effort as they won a spree of five rounds to kick off the second half, but DAVEY continued to put up strong numbers as the rest of his team combined with him to close out the series, taking a 16-11 map victory to win the tournament.
