Noxio and Northern Forces are just one series away from running the bracket as the 59th seed

Day one of the first open qualifier for IEM New York has come to a close, seeing a wide open field riddled with upsets trimmed down to just RBG, Mike Tysons, Rebirth and Northern Forces.

Carrying Brian fell short of getting Brian "Brian" Oliver an HLTV page despite having noteworthy names like Logan "Voltage" Long, Rahul "curry" Nemani, Cameron "cam" Kern, and Josiah "JoJo" Jimenez doing the carrying. Meanwhile, numerous members of Mike Tysons, Northern Forces, and btr fanclub did achieve the elusive milestone yesterday.

New England Whalers were given the top overall seed in the qualifier, but forfeited their first match against btr fanclub, opening the door for the latter team to make a run all the way to the quarterfinals. Northern Forces also dispatched ESEA MDL Season 34 side Infinity to kickoff their Cinderella story.

The bracket worked out nicely for Mike Tysons and btr fanclub, as their quarterfinal match ensured that one of the two stacks would be given the opportunity to play for a Closed Qualifier spot. Everett "poisonn" Ivy and Armen "armen" Fesliyan tried their best to get it done for btr fanclub as they combined for 50 frags, but Mike Tysons came out swinging as a whole team and their more balanced kill distribution, led by Devin "AtomiK" Ferrell with 25 kills, would eventually prevail. They advance to play for the Closed Qualifier as the 72nd seed in the event.

Colby "Walco" Walsh and Josh "pwny" VanGorder led the way for RBG with 25 and 20 kills, respectively, in a convincing win over Kinship. Kinship were led by Koby "kobruh" Higgs and Kyle "Wolffe" Greenfield, who each contributed 17 frags. Two members of Kinship finished with 10 kills or fewer.

In what ended up being the thriller match of the evening, Northern Forces pulled out the thirty-round upset over recently-signed ESEA MDL Season 35 side Eclipse. Nick "zeptic" Kaoud and Tyler "tweiss" Weiss combined for just shy of fifty frags, but Northern Forces would not be denied. After dropping their first two match points, they came through in the final round to keep overtime and Eclipse at bay, with "omniscient" leading the server with 26 kills.

Rebirth had both of their rosters playing in this event, but it was their ESEA MDL Season 35 squad featuring Carson "nosraC" O'Reilly that was able to handily defeat Positive Vibes Only. The newcomers, nosraC and Ali "phantom" Sachs, led their side to victory with 25 and 23 kills, respectively. Justin "FaNg" Coakley led the server as a whole with 26, but playing with coach Max "TR1LL-" Kesselhaut in place of Brendan "Bwills" Williams ended up being too much for Positive Vibes Only to overcome.
