WESG Day One: Cloud9 go flawless, subtLe winless

Move over Kjaerbye, we have a new Top 10 Anime Betrayal.

The first day of matches have concluded in the WESG North American finals, which are now being played online, and will grant multiple spots to the World Finals in China.

The first day featured lots of MDL on MDL action, which, let's face it, these results are anyone's guess. However, FRENCH CANADIANS were dominant, while subtLe wilted. Cloud9, continuing their Major form, bashed SK on Inferno on their way to a 3-0 start.

The full results were as follows:

United States Mythic 16-12 Canada subtLe Cobblestone
United States Swole Patrol 1-16 Canada FRENCH CANADIANS Inferno
United States Mythic 10-16 Canada FRENCH CANADIANS Overpass
United States Swole Patrol 16-14 Canada subtLe Overpass
United States Cloud9 16-2 Brazil SK Inferno
Canada FRENCH CANADIANS 11-16 Brazil SK Cobblestone
United States Cloud9 16-7 United States Mythic Mirage
United States Cloud9 16-3 United States Swole Patrol Inferno
United States Mythic 3-16 Brazil SK Mirage

With five out of six teams from this online event headed to China, seeding is critical. Cloud9 are currently sitting pretty at the top, while Kyle "OCEAN" O'Brien friends are anything but. The top four teams will advance to a single-elimination bracket, primarily playing for prize money, whereas the bottom two teams will fight for that last spot to China.

The WESG North America standings after day one are:

Team Matches Wins Losses Round Differential Points
United States Cloud9 3 3 0 +36 9
Canada FRENCH CANADIANS 3 2 1 +16 6
Brazil SK 3 2 1 +4 6
United States Swole Patrol 3 1 2 -26 3
United States Mythic 4 1 3 -24 3
Canada subtLe 2 0 2 -6 0

Over in the female tournament, it's Those Damn Canadians who are off to a perfect start. Although CLG Red were looking to securely take their opener, with a 10-0 lead, the Canadians rallied together and secured the majority of the remaining match to go take it 16-14. CLG Red didn't let defeat knock them down too long, with dominant victories over their other opponents.

The full results for the female tournament so far are:

United States Freedom Fraggers 8-16 United States American Eagles Nuke
United States CLG Red 14-16 Canada Those Damn Canadians Mirage
United States Freedom Fraggers 16-1 Canada Poutine Puggers Inferno
United States CLG Red 16-1 United States American Eagles Train
Canada Those Damn Canadians 16-2 Canada Poutine Puggers Cobblestone
United States CLG Red 16-4 United States Freedom Fraggers Cache

With only one spot available for the Global Finals on offer for the Female tournament, the top four teams will be placed into a single-elimination bracket, with the champion qualifying for China. With no-one yet safe or clearly ahead, it's still all up for grabs.

The table of results after the first day is as follows:

Team Matches Wins Losses Round Differential Points
Canada Those Damn Canadians 2 2 0 +16 6
United States CLG Red 3 2 1 +25 6
United States American Eagles 2 1 1 -7 3
United States Freedom Fraggers 3 1 2 -5 3
Canada Poutine Puggers 2 0 2 -29 0

The tournament will resume at 2pm ET with subtLe taking on SK, and the female side will restart with American Eagles taking on Those Damn Canadians at 3:15pm.
