PwnAlone and New England Whalers joined the field of eight for the Closed Qualifier in convincing fashion

Triumph, Recon 5, New England Whalers breeze through to DreamHack Masters Spring Closed Qualifier

Monstars needed all three maps and a thirty round decider to get the job done.

Four win-and-in matches occurred in the DreamHack Masters Spring qualifier yesterday, which saw all four incumbent MDL teams take care of business, some more easily than others. Recon 5, Triumph, and the New England Whalers wrapped things up in two maps, but Monstars were pushed all the way to the brink by PDHM.

The new look Recon 5 featuring Jason "neptune" Tran came out swinging against blood, sweat, and tears with a 10-5 CT-side to open the series on Inferno. From there they were able to comfortably close the map before the Canadian side could hit double digits and secured the 1-0 series lead. Dominick "JazzPimp" Dimpfel led the way with 25 kills.

Recon 5 started Nuke with a strong first half effort as well, tallying nine rounds on T-side. blood, sweat, and tears kept it much closer than they did on Inferno, but the series concluded in a 2-0 sweep anyway. neptune was the man to watch on Nuke for Recon 5 as he tallied 24 kills and finished the series with a 1.26 rating across both maps.

The new additions are paying off already for Triumph, as Rahul "curry" Nemani and Paytyn "Junior" Johnson were the best players in the server for the stags yesterday. Inferno took all thirty rounds and all that curry and Junior could muster, shouldering much of the load on a map that saw just the two of them finish at an even K/D or above for Triumph in the victory.

Nuke was simply Junior's playground, he finished 21-8 with a 1.76 rating in Triumph's complete dismantling of ETHEREAL.

It was a nice story for Orion, having beaten Yeah to get to this point, but this matchup was all New England Whalers, seeing all five players finish with a positive K/D on both maps for the victors, while none of the members of Orion managed to achieve that on either map.

Josh "PwnAlone" Pigue was the highest rated player in the sweep, posting a 1.63 rating to go along with 41 kills. 21 of those came on Mirage, the other 20 were good for best in the server on Nuke. Jonathan "djay" Dallal was the top fragger in the series, one-upping PwnAlone with 42 kills. 23 of those kills on Mirage saw djay lead the server along with Daniel "roca" Gustaferri.

Monstars had an interesting path to the Closed Qualifier but eventually got the job done against PDHM. Ian "tex" Botsch was disconnected from the match with PC issues for the majority of map one, so Monstars opted to play 4v5 without him. Though tex would eventually return, it was Micheal "Swisher" Schmid and Chad "Oderus" Miller who topped out with 31 and 32 kills, respectively, to drag Monstars to overtime, where they prevailed 4-0 to take a 1-0 series lead.

Things started close on Inferno, with Kyle "Wolffe" Greenfield and PDHM barely etching out a first half win on CT-side, but it was PDHM's T-side that won them their opponent's map pick. They closed the match with an 8-2 second half, successfully breaking the Monstars defense time and time again to force a decider map. James "jams" Holley led the way with 23 kills for PDHM in the map two victory.

Mirage was the chosen battleground for the decider, one that went all thirty rounds. Monstars let a 13-8 lead slip to a 14-13 deficit, then won the final three rounds to take the decider, the series, and the spot in the Closed Qualifier. Dylan "RIKO" Sabin-Arnce and tex combined for 50 kills on map three.
