Investments in Brehze have paid off

OpTic, NRG, Heroic, BIG through to cs_summit 3 upper bracket

While NRG strolls forward, compLexity falter despite a strong comeback chance against OpTic.

Down in Los Angeles, the third edition of cs_summit kicked off, featuring eight teams duking it out in a double-elimination bracket for a piece of the $150,000 prize pool.

The first match saw compLexity take on OpTic, a rivalry that has grown infamous with player strife. The series kicked off with OpTic taking the first four rounds, with compLexity responding with five straight rounds. The Danes retaliated with a similar feat, winning the last six rounds of the half to take a 10-5 lead in the first half. With the point deficit padded out to 6-3, Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz spearheaded an insane comeback, edging out Inferno 16-13.

compLexity's strong performance didn't carry over to the first half of Mirage, where OpTic crushed the North Americans with an 11-4 half. Shahzeb "ShahZaM" Khan attempted to lead his team through a similar comeback akin to the first map's, but were halted by OpTic, who closed the map 16-10 and tied the series 1-1.

Both teams were neck-and-neck in the first half of Nuke, with OpTic edging out a narrow 8-7 lead despite being on the T-side. Taking advantage of the CT-side, René "cajunb" Borg crushed the American opposition, giving his team the map 16-10 and taking the series 2-1.

Ghost looked to make their mark in Los Angeles by taking on NRG, who is ranked just above them in our most recent top 10. Their efforts appeared to be fruitless at first on Train, with NRG taking the first eleven rounds of the half. Ghost rebounded in the last four rounds, giving themselves a bit of headroom, but still down 4-11 at halftime. On the CT-side, Matthew "Wardell" Bowman became the playmaker for Ghost, with the Canadian-core team pushing the game into overtime. In overtime, Ghost repeated their feat from the first half, taking four straight rounds to usurp the first map 19-15.

Ghost's momentum continued onto Inferno, with Jason "neptune" Tran and co taking the lead in the first half 9-6. Unfortunately, despite the lead, NRG quickly found themselves back on top, rolling forward on the Terrorist side to tie the series with a 16-13 comeback against Ghost.

Nuke was the tightest map of the whole series, but didn't appear so at first, with NRG dominating Ghost once again in the first half. Down 4-11 once again at halftime, Ghost put forward a valiant effort, with Wardell once again shining as the team came close to bringing the game into overtime 14-15. Alas, one round win from NRG shattered those dreams, with NRG edging out the map 16-14, taking the series 2-1 and moving onto the second round of the upper bracket.

While the previous two series were long and arduous, with both going to the decider map, Heroic made quick work of Kinguin. Andreas "MODDII" Fridh and Daniel "mertz" Mertz handily dealt with the Polish squad, with a quick 16-5 on Nuke followed by a 16-3 closer on Overpass sending Kinguin down to the lower bracket and moving Heroic up the bracket.

The last series of the (long) day saw BIG take on G2, with both teams eager to finally find themselves a LAN victory. BIG kicked off Train with a strong 11-4 lead in the first half, which was reflected back at them by G2, sending the first map into overtime. Richard "shox" Papillon and Owen "smooya" Butterfield led their respective teams through the first round of overtime and took the first map into double overtime. BIG finally found their way to the end in double overtime, taking the first map 22-19.

Inferno's first half was similarly dominant for BIG, albeit lesser so, with the German squad only taking a 9-6 lead in the first half. Nonetheless, smooya crushed the French squad in the second half, with BIG taking the second map 16-7 and rounding out the series with a clean 2-0.
