Favorites advance to DreamHack Open Anaheim Closed Qualifier

INTZ, Riot Squad, and Triumph didn't let their opponents break into double digits during the quarterfinals.

The last leg of the open qualifier for DreamHack Open Anaheim has concluded, with Chaos, INTZ, Riot Squad, and Triumph securing spots in tomorrow's closed qualifier.

Starting off with the remaining round five matches, the majority were one-sided affairs for the favorite team, with Oceanus crushing Fraggin4Praze 16-1, New England Whalers securing a 16-7 win against hardstuck main, and Riot Squad decimating Mythic with a 16-1 Overpass win.

As for the match between Triumph and Big Frames, Big Frames almost secured the upset victory against Triumph, however a 36-frag game from Michael "Grim" Wince was enough to push Triumph over the line to secure a 16-13 win on Dust2.

The final round five match saw Swole Patrol, with Jordan "n0thing" Gilbert in tow, face off against Chaos on Vertigo. Thanks to a strong performance from Braxton "swag" Pierce on the T-side, Swole Patrol narrowly won the half 8-7. After switching sides, the team came close to securing the win against Chaos before Owen "smooya" Butterfield rallied the troops with 34 frags to help Chaos win the match 16-13.

Moving into the quarterfinals, INTZ were the first team to punch their ticket to the closed qualifier with a one-sided win over Oceanus; securing a 16-5 win and Mirage and a 16-2 win on Vertigo.

The final series of the night ended up being fairly competitive as Chaos ended up taking a close 2-1 win over New England Whalers.

Beginning the series on Whalers' map pick of Inferno, Chaos narrowly secured their CT-side 9-6 thanks to continued strong performances from smooya. After switching sides, Chaos immediately secured map point after converting their T-side pistol into a run of six rounds. With a long way to overtime ahead of them, Whalers managed to hold on as they won the next six rounds in a row however with the odds stacked against them, they faltered in round 27 allowing Chaos to secure the map 16-11.

After a tough loss on Inferno, after starting Dust2 down 4-0, Whalers bounced back with a strong CT-side, managing to close the rounds deficit to just one round before the two teams switched sides. On their T-side, Whalers continued to perform well, winning the first six rounds in a row to take the lead for the first time in the map before Chaos finally answered back with three rounds of their own. The remainder of the map saw Chaos continue to claim rounds however Whalers narrowly managed to secure map point before securing the round 30 victory to take Dust2 16-14 and force the series onto Nuke.

With the series tied, Nuke ended up being another close map between the two MDL teams with New England Whalers starting their T-side up 3-0 before Chaos pushed back to narrowly win their CT-side 8-7. After switching sides, the map slowly began to get away from Whalers as Chaos outpaced them to ultimately secure the map 16-12. During Nuke, Josh "steel" Nissan put in a massive performance, ending the map with a 1.78 rating.
