Cloud9 and TDC upset in China; NA dream is dead

It was a series that went the distance, but it was an underdog from Brazil that would topple the Major Champions.

North America's time in Haikou, China finally came to an end yesterday after falling to Brazil's oNe in the quarterfinals of the WESG World Finals. The Bo3 match went the full distance as both teams were taken to their limits, but it was oNe that came out on top in a 2-1 scoreline.

The series began on Train with Cloud9 on the Terrorist side. After winning the pistol round, oNe immediately stole their momentum and replied with three of their own. The North Americans struggled to piece together any sort of offensive pressure until the end of the half, ending their T-side 7-8 in favor of oNe. Cloud9's CT-side began as a mirror image of the first half as they claimed the second pistol round of the game, followed by oNe going on what seemed like a never-ending streak until they closed out the map 16-11.

Being down a map and their tournament life on the line, Cloud9 recomposed themselves and kicked off Mirage with a bang. The sole surviving North American team at WESG invoked their signature aggression and wild playstyle they've become so well-known for and decimated oNe on their Terrorist side with a 12-3 half-time score. Little else can be said as Cloud9 claimed all remaining rounds of their CT-side, winning out 16-3 and tying up the series.

The fate of both teams was to be decided on the final map of Cache. Things started off rocky for Cloud9 after winning yet another pistol round, only to be bested by oNe in the following three. After narrowly taking the first full-buy, Cloud9 dictated the rest of the half until it's end at a 10-5 scoreline in their favor.

Once oNe was on their CT-side Cloud9 fell apart. Almost half of the remaining rounds in regulation ended in defusals, a product of the North Americans inability to hold the sites they had claimed. Despite their impressive display in the first half, Cloud9 could only muster two rounds in the second, allowing oNe to take the map and series in a 16-12 scoreline and bringing an end to North America's run at WESG.

Player Michael "Uber" Stapells posted oNe's emotional winning moment on Twitter shortly after the series had ended:

Cloud9's departs China with a 5th-8th place finish and a $25,000 prize. Unfortunately for the Brazilians, they too fell in their proceeding semifinal match against fnatic shortly after their victory over Cloud9. They are scheduled to play a third place decider match later today against Russia that will mean the difference between going home with $70,000 or $150,000.

Over on the female side of the event, Those Damn Canadians lost in close but still shocking fashion to the Chinese side LLG. This threw them into the third place match against Sweden fe, who they had defeated earlier in the tournament, and did so again. Both sets saw uncharacteristically poor outtings from Amanda "rain" Smith.

Those Damn Canadians thus leave the WESG World Finals in third place and $20,000, thinking of what might have been.
