Brehze, September's top North American player, started October with a bang in Evil Geniuses' 2-0 win over Triumph

IEM New York Day 1 Recap - Favorites flawless so far

The favorites all dispatched their upset-minded challengers 2-0.

The first day of play in IEM New York has concluded and the higher ranked teams were all able to dispatch their opposition with little trouble. Vincent "Brehze" Cayonte had the standout performance of the day, with a 2.02 rating against Triumph on Inferno.

On Overpass Evil Geniuses dismantled Triumph thanks to a well-balanced team performance. Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz was the only player with fewer than 18 kills in the opening map for the fourth ranked team in the world, while it was Paytyn "junior" Johnson who mustered the best performance for Triumph with 15 kills.

Once the battleground shifted to Inferno it was time for the aforementioned Brehze show, where the rifler posted 25 kills in twenty rounds, while dying just five times. Triumph had absolutely no answer for Brehze's performance, as Erik "penny" Penny was their only player who even managed to break the double digit mark in the kill column, finishing with fourteen.

New England Whalers thundered out of the gate and jumped out to a convincing 14-1 lead on Train, but then let ImPerium rattle off nine of ten rounds to start the second half. It took the undefeated MDL side seven attempts to convert match point into the map one victory. Jonathan "djay" Dallal led the way for Whalers with 29 kills, while James "EllisoN" Ellison topped the leaderboard for ImPerium with 17 frags.

ImPerium had the three highest rated players in the server on Overpass, but that did not equate to a map win and force the series to a third map. Instead, Whalers converted a 9-6 halftime lead into a sweep before ImPerium were even able to reach ten rounds. Carter "CarterJ" Richardson was the top fragger in the server with 22 kills, but a combined effort from old friend Brandon "BOOBIE" Roberts and Josh "PwnAlone" Pigue with 21 and 20 frags, respectively, powered the Whalers to the 2-0 sweep.

Sebastian "retchy" Tropiano and a returning Kevin "4pack" Przypasniak tallied 28 and 21 kills, respectively, to keep Rebirth's opening match with FURIA interesting. Their efforts would be in vain however, as the Brazilians were simply able to overpower the ESEA MDL Season 35 side on Mirage. Vinicius "VINI" Figueiredo, FURIA's bottom frag, outperfomed everyone but the Rebirth duo on the scoreboard.

Things only got worse for Rebirth on Inferno, where Zack "XotiC" Elshani was their best player with 18 kills. retchy maintained his momentum after the first map and added 17 more frags, but 4pack was unable to muster half of his first map kill total as FURIA steamrolled their way to a sweep. Andrei "arT" Piovezan led both teams with 27 kills.

RBG were able to keep Nuke close, bringing the scoreline all the way back to 14-12 after conceding a 10-5 advantage to 100 Thieves at halftime, but the lone Norwegian on the Oceanic side was pivotal in the thieves stealing what was rightfully theirs. Joakim "jkaem" Myrbostad finished the opening map with a server-leading 26 kills, while Austin "gmanchew" Vieira led RBG with 22 frags.

Once RBG were pulled away from their comfort pick, 100 Thieves easily handled the Canadian side on Vertigo, quickly turning a 12-3 halftime advantage into a 16-4 final score. Aaron "AZR" Ward was 10 kills ahead of the nearest RBG player, Josh "pwny" VanGorder, as the pair led their teams with 26 and 16, respectively.
