InControl win Fragadelphia 16: The Block over Drypeek

The ESEA Advanced core slammed the door on Drypeek's reverse sweep bid.

Fragadelphia 16: The Block was the first $10,000+ Nerd Street Gamers LAN since Fragadelphia 15 and a number of teams descended upon the city of brotherly love to compete for the lion's share of that sizable prize pool.

After all was said and done, InControl ran the upper bracket and then secured the best-of-five grand final to secure $5,500 and 8,000 Frag points toward direct qualification for Fragadelphia 16 next year.

InControl was granted a first-round bye in the upper bracket, then defeated PreGaming to lock up an upper semifinal berth against New Threat, who beat Minimum Wage Workers and Lavender to reach that same point. InControl won in straight maps to advance to the upper bracket final with an overtime win on Vertigo and emphatic triumph on Nuke.

On the other side of the bracket YeniCherry was granted the first-round bye and then needed three maps to take down All Gas No Brakes to secure their upper semifinal berth. They were met there by heretic's daycare center who dispatched Noctyrne, Drypeek, and then YeniCherry with three consecutive sweeps to meet InControl in the upper bracket final.

Up until this point InControl had remained true to their name and had not dropped a map. heretic's daycare center ended that undefeated streak quickly with a decisive win on Ancient, spearheaded by a 21 frag effort from Isaac "Izik" Zeigler. But the ESEA Advanced roster featuring John "arcade" Rogel from Davenport University and Kamron "kmrn" Manii of fellow Advanced side LifeThruGaming were unphased and proceeded to reverse sweep heretic's daycare center by winning seven of their last eight rounds on Nuke and eight straight to close out their Overpass decider.

Drypeek put together a convincing lower bracket run after their early loss to heretic's day care and eventually clashed with YeniCherry in the lower bracket final, who only needed to defeat PreGaming in their lower bracket adventures. Drypeek's momentum continued to propel them onward as they claimed Dust2 with a flawless, ten-round CT side, then stole YeniCherry's map pick in a closely contested affair on Inferno which required six attempts at match point to convert a map and series win. Michael "Brashi" Chadwick led YeniCherry and the server with 47 kills in the series, closely followed by Weijun "KenZ" Zhu, who finished with 46 frags.

Drypeek made the most of their second chance against heretic's daycare center and swiftly doubled up their foes in the opening map of the consolidation final. The Drypeek defense conceded just two rounds in the second half and Jiaming "L1" Wang exploded out of the gates with 29 frags, markedly better than the top scorer for heretic's daycare center, Matthew "tatm" Munro, who finished with 19 kills.

Nuke was significantly closer and heretic's daycare center put up a fight on their own map pick. Drypeek eventually won four of their final five rounds down the stretch to pull away for the win after a back-and-forth affair. This time it was Junjie "Gank88" Lin who carried Drypeek with 29 kills, while both tatm and Bradley "Slugy" Kohler finished with 23 frags in the loss.

It was a spirited grand final that went the distance between InControl and Drypeek, with the former having a 1-0 series advantage as a result of their upper bracket successes. InControl built on that lead with a win on Vertigo where they quickly turned a 9-6 halftime lead into a 15-8 scoreline. It took five match points but the ESEA Advanced side closed out the map to put Drypeek on series point.

The sense of urgency seemed to spark something inside of Drypeek, who grinded out a gutsy, thirty-round win on Overpass to steal the map pick of InControl, then followed it up with a dominant win on Inferno. Over that two-map span KenZ popped off and racked up 52 kills for Drypeek to even the series at two maps each.

In the Mirage decider it seemed that only Haoran "ch1py" Wang showed up to play for Drypeek, his 29 kills were a cut above the rest of his squad, with the next closest teammate being KenZ who finished with 15 frags. InControl seized the map, series, and championship with a flawless eleven-round CT-side. That dominance was thanks largely to kmrn and Andrew "Andrew" Burrell, who combined for 33 kills during that stretch, an average of three kills per round.
