The first day of ESEA Summer Cash Cup 3 played out yesterday, seeing 63 teams compete for $2,000 worth of travel support to Fragadelphia 15. In a slight change from ESEA's standard Cash Cup format, there were no invited teams this time around, meaning each side has to traverse the entire bracket for a shot at the prize.
Erik "fl0m" Flom and Mythic, who were set to play with Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund, almost didn't get off of the starting blocks, as they forgot to check in.
alright boys flom forgot to check us in for the event so ggs was fun.— JoJo (@JosiahCSGO) July 24, 2021
Fortunately, they were able to get their oversight corrected.
The first round of play transpired as would be expected, but two recently-promoted Premier sides exited the event in the second round. Eros (formerly Villainous), found themselves on the wrong side of a 16-12 loss to Cohesive Concepts on Nuke, with stand-in "Jersey" nearly dropping 30 frags for the Advanced squad.
The third round of play saw Mythic's run come to an end at the hands of Triton, a 16-7 drubbing on Vertigo. GeT_RiGhT top-fragged for Mythic in the loss. Triumph were forced to overtime on Dust2 by Project Freelancer, featuring Aidan "Feral" Wood and Matthew "tatm" Munro, but buckled down once there and escaped with a 19-15 victory. tatm went 35-26 on the map, and then later in the day found himself back with ex-UYU.
In the fourth round of play, and the final one that occurred yesterday, Triumph and Party Astronauts took 16-9 victories on Mirage against SalutLA and Third Impact, respectively. RBG had a bit of an easier time handling Recon 5, with the latter team fielding Kevin "consti" Yi as their fifth player.
The most competitive map of the round was the one between Bad News Bears and Triton, with the newly-minted Premier side holding Michael "Swisher" Schmid and co. to a slim 8-7 lead at the end of the first half, and then forcing overtime with a matching 8-7 CT-side. The Bears were not to be denied forward progress, however, and ultimately emerged victorious 19-17.
