NEKIZ and paiN will look to qualify for the Closed Qualifier tomorrow and challenge for a main event spot

Quartet advance to day two of DreamHack Open January qualifier

Just one best-of-three series separates two teams from joining Rebirth and High Coast in the closed stage.

With day one of the DreamHack Open January qualifier in the books the field is down to the final four: paiN, Levitate, Bad News Bears, and Recon 5. Just two of those teams will join Rebirth and High Coast in the Closed Qualifier, where two spots in the main event will be up for grabs.

After an uneventful first round, the second round of play saw a number of ESEA Premier Season 36 teams bow out early. timbermen forfeited their match against Hc while Third Impact were taken down by Flash Point; simultaneously, HeadShotKings upset Secret Club, leaving three Premier sides out of contention. Pryde made the round of 16 before being taken out by paiN, and Kinship Ghost made it to the same point before forfeiting their match against Recon 5 as "something came up" for one of their players.

paiN enjoyed a first-round bye and then defeated DankerMemerson, Pryde, and Eclipse en route to a semi-final spot. Gabriel "NEKIZ" Schenato led the way with 27 kills in the final matchup for the Brazilian side.

Levitate prevailed over Dank Dynasty, InFinity, SKDC, and Flash Point to lock in their matchup against paiN tomorrow for a Closed Qualifier spot. William "rin" McGraw led all players in the match against Flash Point with 24 frags as Levitate impressed in their first event flying a new banner.

ex-Chaos have adopted the Bad News Bears branding once again, and tore through the competition under their former moniker. Eminence were dispatched of 16-0 to kick things off, a win which was followed up by victories against big brain energy, RBG, and ImPerium. Gabe "Spongey" Greiner led the server with 26 kills in the ImPerium game, while Jonathan "Jonji" Carey was the top player in the match, sporting a 1.81 rating and just under 120 ADR in the 16-9 win.

Recon 5 received a first-round bye, defeated Synergy, and then were the beneficiaries of a forfeit by Kinship Ghost. Their matchup with Russian Canadians went the full thirty rounds but they eventually prevailed on the back of a pair of 27 kill performances from Jeff "RZU" Ngo and David "cynic" Polster.

Tomorrow's matchups will be:

Brazil paiN vs.   United States Levitate
United States Bad News Bears vs.   United States Recon 5

paiN vs. Levitate is scheduled to begin at 6PM EST and Bad News Bears vs. Recon 5 is set to begin at 9PM EST.
