Mythic and Rugratz through to IEM Beijing Closed Qualifier

Rebirth will face Morning Light on Monday to fill the final spot as New England Whalers have been invited to the main event.

The open qualifier for IEM Beijing 2020 has come to a close, seeing Mythic and Rugratz through to the Closed Qualifier.

Additionally, due to Evil Geniuses traveling to Europe for BLAST Premier Fall and New England Whalers being invited to the main event in their place, a final consolidation series will be held on Monday between Rebirth and Morning Light (formerly Springroll) to fill the now vacant spot in the Closed Qualifier.

Even with a modest turnout of 41 teams, the first two rounds of the qualifier featured a number of upsets, with Incognito being eliminated by Front 16-12 on Inferno while paiN exited the qualifier following a close 16-14 loss to Springroll on Vertigo.

In the third round, Vireo.pro were bested by Revenant 16-8 on Mirage. Other notable results in this round saw Rise eliminated by Rugratz, Big Chillin taken down by Secret Club, and Front crushed by Kinship 16-6.

Moving into the quarterfinals MDL squads began to meet, with Ali "phantom" Sachs' Rebirth starting things off by eliminating Kinship 16-10 on Train.

Next up, Rugratz made quick work of Secret Club in a surprisingly one-sided match on Overpass. Starting on their T-side, Adam "mada" Pampuch helped power his team to a 10-5 lead before Rugratz put up a near perfect CT-side to win the map 16-6.

With four teams left standing, Rugratz were the first team to secure a spot in the Closed Qualifier as they quickly dispatched Rebirth in a two-map series. After a close opening half on Overpass that saw Rebirth end their T-side up 8-7, a solid CT-side from Rugratz saw the newly formed lineup only give up three more rounds before winning the map 16-11.

After this, Rebirth were underwhelming on their map pick of Mirage as Rugratz won their CT-side 9-6 before rapidly closing out the map 16-7.

The next series also ended up a quick two-map affair, as Mythic dispatched Springroll 2-0 on Inferno and Vertigo.

The start of Inferno saw the Advanced side initially lead at half-time on their T-side 9-6 thanks in part to a strong half from Khalid "MEs" Almathkor. However, this lead was quickly dissipated after switching sides, as Kaitlin "Keiti" Boop helped pave the way for Mythic to win the map 16-13.

Moving onto Vertigo, Mythic were largely unopposed on their T-side, winning the half 11-4 without much trouble. After a minor resurgence from Springroll, Mythic wrapped up the map 16-7 to claim a spot in the Closed Qualifier.
