eUnited upset FURIA to claim ESL One New York spot

MarKE led the shock and awe campaign against FURIA as a 16-3 victory on Overpass paved the way for the North American team's victory.

eUnited have claimed a spot at ESL One New York after pulling off a major 2-0 upset against FURIA.

The day started off with ESL bringing in INTZ and New Identity as last-minute replacements for Cloud9 and Ghost, with these changes drawing the ire of numerous players as brackets were released within hours of matches starting, likely giving teams little time to prepare for their opening matchups.

Complexity were the first team to notch a win, claiming a 2-0 victory over Envy to avenge themselves of yesterday's loss in the IEM Chicago Closed Qualifier. Starting off on Inferno, Envy managed to end the first half with a slight 8-7 lead, though it was short-lived as Complexity were able to turn things around with a one-sided T-side to take the map 16-10.

On Vertigo, Envy started off in a far worse position as Complexity mounted a rock-solid CT-side that saw the team run up a 11-4 lead. After switching sides, Envy would manage to fight up to ten rounds though with their strong CT-side start, Complexity managed to maintain their lead and close out Vertigo with another 16-10 scoreline.

The next series of the day saw Lazarus claim a 2-0 victory over New Identity, making up for their surprise loss to the team during the IEM Chicago Closed Qualifier. On Mirage, Lazarus started the series off in the lead with the team closing out their T-side with an 11-4 lead. On their CT-side, Lazarus immediately forced match point as they found the first four rounds of the half. New Identity attempted to answer back with four rounds of their own though their comeback was short-lived as Envy took Mirage 16-8.

On Dust2, New Identity managed to put up a better show as they started their T-side up 5-2 however Lazarus clawed the half  back to ultimately take it 9-6. After this, New Identity seemed to run out of steam as Lazarus quickly cleaned up taking the map 16-8. During the series, newest Lazarus member Jaccob "yay" Whiteaker led this team with a 1.45 rating during the series. It should be noted that New Identity fielded Marian "tyfoon" Lesnic in-place of Jonathan "Jonji" Carey during the series.

Up next, eUnited managed to take a 2-0 victory over replacement team INTZ, but not before two close maps on Overpass and Mirage. On Overpass, it looked like eUnited were prepared to take the map in quick fashion as they dominated on their T-side to put up an 11-4 lead in the first half. However, upon switching sides INTZ bounced back, claiming seven out of the first eight rounds of the half to close the gap to a single round. In the end though eUnited never conceded the lead as they claimed the next four rounds in a row to close out Overpass 16-11.

On Mirage, the team teams continued to trade blows, with INTZ managing to take the half 8-7. Following this, the Brazilians ran up their lead as they claimed the first four rounds of the half. Their lead and their confidence were short-lived though, as after eUnited's economy recovered, the North Americans bounced back by taking ten out of the next twelve rounds to close out the map 16-14. During the series, Austin "Cooper-" Abadir helped to push his team over the edge with a 75.4% KAST and a 1.25 rating.

The final quarter-finals matchup was a Brazilian brawl as FURIA managed to overtake oNe, but not before the underdogs managed to take a map off of the top ten team. Starting on oNe's pick of Train, FURIA absolutely dominated, quickly taking the map 16-4 without much fanfare from oNe.

On Mirage, oNe made up for their less than stellar performance on Train as they started the map off by claiming a  9-6 CT half. Upon switching sides, FURIA found the first four rounds on their CT-side to take the lead, though oNe would recover and batter FURIA's defenses to eventually take the map 16-12.

On the third and final map oNe's maiden voyage on Vertigo did not go as planned as FURIA started the map off by decimating oNe's defenses to claim an 11-4  lead. After switching sides, oNe found four more rounds, though it mattered little in the end as FURIA managed to close out the map and the series with a 16-8 scoreline.

Another stellar performance from Cooper- allowed eUnited to move past EPL opposition Complexity on Nuke and Mirage. On Nuke, eUnited started off trailing behind Complexity as the team managed to close out their CT half with a 10-5 lead. However, once the two squads switched sides, eUnited managed to claw things back with a strong CT-side as they only allowed Complexity three round before eUnited took the map 16-13.

On Mirage, eUnited's momentum continued as they started off their CT-side by claiming nine out of the first ten rounds. Following this, Complexity would manage to make things more competitive as they took the final five rounds of the half to find a more promising three-round deficit. Complexity's outlook grew far worse after this as eUnited rebounded to force map point after six out of the next seven rounds on their T-side. Complexity claimed three more rounds though Cooper- managed to clutch a 2v2 situation in the end to claim the 16-10 victory on Mirage.

The second semifinal started off with FURIA and Lazarus in a dead heat as the two teams finished off the first half with the Brazilians scraping by with a one-round lead. Moving into the second half Lazarus cooled off as FURIA left the team without any answer as they dominated on their T-side to close the map 16-8.

On Overpass, the two teams once again closed off the first half neck in neck, although this time Lazarus managed to claim the one-round lead. Lazarus would build on this to claim four out the next five rounds to take a 12-8 lead though their lead mattered little in the end as a comeback from Kaike "KSCERATO" Cerato and co. saw the Brazilian squad narrowly pull ahead to take Overpass 16-14.

The start of the finals between eUnited and FURIA proved to be extremely eventful as eUnited, and more specifically MarkE, absolutely shocked FURIA by winning their T-side with a massive 12-3 lead. This form continued into the second half as eUnited showed no signs of slowing down, closing out the map 16-3. During the one-sided map MarKE found an insane 32 kills alongside a career best 2.57 rating.

FURIA managed to recover themselves on Vertigo as they claimed a 9-6 lead on their T-side. Upon switching sides, eUnited's returned the favor to FURIA as they managed to claim seven rounds on their T-side to narrowly secure the 16-14 victory, claiming their spot in ESL One New York. While MarKE was stellar on Overpass, he struggled immensely on Vertigo, with Kaleb "moose" Jayne instead taking the reins with a 1.47 rating.
