Bad News Bears and Singularity advance to Mythic Cup 2 grand finals

The one-day event sees an extension as early delays resulted in late matches.

The grand finalists for the second Mythic Cup have been determined, with Bad News Bears and Singularity as the last two teams left standing following the conclusion of the semifinals.

Due to technical errors with FACEIT's platform that resulted in maps in-game appearing as their wingman counterparts and a handful of other issues, the cup began two hours later than intended. Fortunately, the first trio of quarterfinal matches played out in similar fashion, with each of the winning teams grabbing a relatively easy victory on one map and narrowly stealing away wins on a second.

Two such series resulted in overtime maps, first with Party Astronauts and Spacestation going the distance on Nuke. 8-7 splits in each of the halves forced the two teams into overtime, with Party Astronauts eventually pulling out the win 22-20 to move the series to Vertigo. There, a dominant 13-2 opening half on the T-side allowed for Josh "PwnAlone" Pigue's side to close out the series in quick fashion, taking a 2-0 win to move on in the cup.

It was the inverse for Bad News Bears, with Peter "ptr" Gurney propelling his side to a 16-7 victory on Mirage over Royal to take an early lead in the series. Notably, Royal were fielding former Bad News Bears member Jeff "RZU" Ngo in place of Brendan "bwills" Williams in their matchup, adding some personal investment from the players during the series. The second map, Inferno, saw tighter margins, with Royal mustering ten rounds on the T-side to keep themselves in the running.

Although that lead was quickly extended to 12-5, Royal were unable to close out the map in regulation, with Bad News Bears managing to force overtime following an 11-15 comeback. With stand-in Austin "crashies" Roberts in tow, Bad News Bears left little room for Royal to return fire, racking up four rounds in the time it took for Royal to win one of their own for a 19-16 map win.

The Cup's namesake team, Mythic, were also quickly eliminated from the running, with Chris and the boys locking out the stream team with a 16-7 win on Nuke. Despite James "hazed" Cobb's best efforts on Inferno, Mythic were unable to capitalize on a 9-6 halftime lead and eventually fell to Christopher "Swahn" Swahn and co. 16-13.

The only quarterfinal matchup to see all three maps played was between Singularity and Sadbots, with Alan "Shakezullah" Hardman's side eventually emerging on top. A surprise start on Dust2 saw Stephen "SGM" Mechan help his side to a narrow 16-14 win, with Singularity immediately answering back on Nuke with a 16-7 scoreline. The two teams remained neck-and-neck at the end of the first half on Inferno, but it was Singularity who finally gained control after swapping to their CT-side to take the final map 16-9.

Like the majority of quarterfinals, the two semifinal matches were swift, with both Singularity and Bad News Bears picking up 2-0 victories to advance.

Bad News Bears were the first to earn their spot in the grand finals as a stellar performance all around gave them a 16-2 victory on their own pick of Overpass, with the team maintaining momentum into Mirage to take a 7-2 lead on the map. Party Astronauts fought back, managing to win the half at 8-7, but ptr's AWP proved too strong following the swapping of sides, allowing for Bad News Bears to edge out a 16-13 win.

Singularity seemed set for a similar scenario as an initial 16-9 win on Nuke started the series off on the right foot, with the team following up their map win by completely crushing Chris and the boys on the CT-side of Inferno for a 13-2 lead. A seven-round streak by Chris and the boys allowed for them to narrow the margin to 13-9, but two additional rounds finally granted Singularity match point. A final effort by Chris and the boys further closed the gap to 13-15, but Singularity prevailed to take the series 2-0.
