AZIO book a free flight to the quarterfinals

ECS Season 6 Challenger Cup Round 1 matches complete

The first day of competition sees the Brazilians out of the upper bracket.

The first round of the ECS Season 6 Challenger cup has wrapped up, with only three matches being played out thanks to a scheduling conflict with BLAST Pro Series Istanbul forcing MIBR to pull out of the qualifier.

Barring AZIO's free win, the first series to wrap up was compLexity's match against lmfao. While lmfao did feature an array of MDL talent and the team did manage to find an initial 4-3 lead against the North American-British team, compLexity crushed lmfao on Mirage with Shahzeb "ShahZaM" Khan finding 23 kills by the end of the 16-4 game.

The second map didn't play out much different, as compLexity nearly went 16-0, only losing the 11th round due to a 3K from Kevin "4pack" Przypasniak. Nonetheless, compLexity closed out Cache 16-1 and swiftly took the series 2-0, moving them onto the next round and knocking lmfao down to the lower bracket.

The next match to wrap up was a Southern Hemisphere showdown between Bravado and FURIA, with both teams having moved to North America earlier this year. Yuri "yuurih" Santos kicked off the first map for his team, as FURIA took Cache by storm with a strong 11-4 half. However, building off a miraculous performance from Aran "Sonic" Groesbeek, Rhys "Fadey" Armstrong led Bravado through an arduous second half, with the map ultimately going the South Africans' way 16-14, coming back from a 4-11 deficit.

The teams were more evenly matched on Nuke, where Bravado edged out a sliver of a lead on the T-side, going 8-7 in the first half. After making it to double-digits, FURIA drilled through seven straight rounds to nearly put them at match point 14-10, before Bravado rebounded with six straight rounds of their own to deny overtime and close the map 16-14, stealing the series 2-0.

The final series of the day played out across three maps, as oNe and Gorilla Gang duked it out for the last spot in the next round of the upper bracket. Nicolas "NikoM" Miozzi and oNe found a decent head start on Dust2, going 9-6 in the first half. Off the backs of Anthony "Vanity" Malaspina and Cameron "hydrex" Kern, Gorilla Gang initiated a comeback and nearly followed through, but ultimately fell short 16-13, with oNe taking map one.

Gorilla Gang rebounded on Train, as Ryan "ryan" Welsh's gang gained the upper hand in the first half 10-5. With a strong lead from the first half, Gorilla Gang handily took six rounds straight to close the Train stop 16-5, bringing the series to the decider map of Inferno.

Both teams were neck-and-neck on Inferno, with the series tied 1-1. Gorilla Gang kicked off the first half, taking the lead at halftime 9-6. Alencar "trk"Rossato and co. swiftly responded, usurping the lead before trading rounds with Gorilla Gang. While oNe were unable to close the game in regulation, the Brazilians were able to force overtime. Despite the strong prospects from earlier rounds, Gorilla Gang crushed oNe in four rounds, closing the map 19-15 and closing the series 2-1 in favor of the Americans.
